Besides deep cleaning the refrigerator so it doesn't run ALL the time (we are still going to have to get a new one in the very near future due to a leaky gasket), we added under-cabinet fluorescent lights (Ikea), a kitchen cart (floor model from Bed Bath and Beyond), and removed several items (hunter green window valance, black shiny fridge cover, strange caulked-on breakfast bar/shelf) that contributed to the cave-y feel the previous owners were invoking. Now we can see our food and eat it too.
